Logique, sociologie et philosophie

Fils d’un père flamand et d’une mère wallonne, il est né près de Liège en Belgique en 1943. Devenu ingénieur polytechnicien à l’Ecole Militaire de Bruxelles, il a rejoint la Marine. On dit que les voyages forment la jeunesse : la Marine lui a certainement permis d’élargir son horizon au delà de la Belgique. Elle lui a en outre permis de rencontrer sa charmante épouse écossaise.

Il est devenu franc-maçon à l’âge de 29 ans. La recherche philosophique au sens large (incluant sociologie, histoire, psychologie, philosophie, art et science) qu’on y pratique entre gens de bords et d’opinions fort différents l’a obligé à toujours relativiser ses opinions et à écouter les autres.

 

Outre la visite du monde, sa carrière militaro-maritime lui a donné quelques expériences qui l’ont profondément marqué. Ainsi il a participé à l’intervention militaire en Bosnie où il était responsable de l’aide fournie par l’OTAN aux institutions internationales, aux organisations non gouvernementales et à la population. L’horreur de cette guerre l’a profondément marqué. Il a également passé quinze ans en milieu international, OTAN d’abord, une institution européenne ensuite. Rien de tel pour mieux comprendre les différences nationales et comprendre les autres.

 

Mais avant tout il est un mathématicien et est donc féru de logique, qu’il tente d’appliquer dans tous les domaines de la vie, même courante. Il se décrit lui-même comme athée, moniste, citoyen du monde et surtout humaniste.

Who is Francis Gevers ?

Son of a Walloon mother and a Flemish father he was born near Liège in Belgium in 1943. Educated in both French and Flemish, he studied engineering in the Polytechnic division of the Military Academy in Brussels before joining the Navy. Travel broadens the mind: the Navy gave him opportunities to look at horizons far beyond Belgium. It was during one of these voyages that he met his charming Scottish wife.

 

He became a freemason at the age of 29. Philosophical research in its broad sense (including sociology, history, psychology, philosophy, arts and the sciences) which freemasonry promotes amongst members from different backgrounds and opinions forced him to listen to others and to moderate his own thinking.

His military-naval career allowed him not only to travel the world but also gave him experiences which had a strong effect on him. He participated in the military peace-keeping operation in Bosnia where he was responsible for support given by NATO to other international organisations, non-governmental organisations and the population. The horror of this war marked him for life. He also spent fifteen years in an international environment, first in NATO and later with a European institution, further helping him to appreciate national differences.

 

But essentially he is a mathematician, fascinated by logic which he tries to apply to all walks of life on a daily basis. He describes himself as an atheist, monist, citizen of the world, but above all a humanist.
